Introduction by Ps Josh
The Book of Colossians is a remarkable piece of God-breathed literature. Written by the Apostle Paul from prison, it is addressed to Christians in the city of Colossae. Paul had neither planted nor visited this church, but knew of it through Epaphras whom he had met while in prison. Believed to have been written somewhere between 53AD and 55AD, Paul wrote this letter to both encourage the believers and to correct some cultural challenges they were facing.
One of the issues addressed was Gnosticism, which denied that Christ was divine or a deity. Paul in chapter one counters this by presenting Christ for who he really is – preeminent, radiant, brilliant, over everything, the firstborn. Pay attention to Paul’s picture of how amazing Jesus Christ actually is.
A second issue addressed was Asceticism, which involves the idea of using self-denial against personal indulgence in order to win God’s approval. In chapter two, Paul points out that we already have God’s approval through the completed work of Jesus Christ on the cross. We can’t do anything to get God to love us more!
...through Colossians, consider these questions as you seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and revelation, for we can’t do this
in our own strength and achieve God’s purposes:
What does what I am reading tell me about You, God? Your character, who You are, Your intentions revealed?
What does this reveal to me about people? It was written to a specific group of people, but what does the Holy Spirit want to teach me through these verses? There may be an individual application, but this needs to be understood in the context of my place in the plurality of people in the body of Christ.
How does what I have just read or learned about help me to relate to God better? What is God calling for? A heart response? Repentance? Gratitude? Worship?
How does what I have just read or learned about help me to relate to people better? What is God calling for? Forgiveness? To let go of resentment? To love? Listen for what Holy Spirit is asking of you.
Don’t waste any day! Engage with the verses for each of the 28 days and see what Jesus is wanting to show you through the Holy Spirit. Coming in humility and with thankful hearts,
let’s open our bibles and ask Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to us,
that we might live our lives for His glory! Each day, write out what the Holy spirit shows you.
