Leading Well : Small Group Leadership

With many people feeling more isolated than ever and struggling with face-to-face relationships, the opportunities to meet these needs through small group expressions are great!  Are you ready to be part of the answer?

Discover how you can effectively lead and facilitate small groups.  Leading Well is a four-session training course written specifically for GraceLife, and designed to prepare your heart for, and develop skills in, small group ministry.  Your participation in small group ministry can contribute to the reaching, raising and releasing of believers to love and care for one another, to bless and encourage one another, and to contribute to the life of Christ wherever they are.

The goal of this training is to provide a framework for healthy biblical leadership and to equip you with practical knowledge and skills for running a variety of small groups.  Some of the biblical teachings covered are:  Being a Disciple of Christ; Walking in Love; Shepherding Others; and Becoming a Servant Leader.   Practical skills include: An Introduction to Small Groups and the Small Group Leader; Understanding Group Developmental Stages; Creating a Life-giving group environment; Facilitating a group; and Asking the Right Questions.  These skills are reinforced through opportunities to practically apply what you are learning within a small group setting, and will equip you to be part of the restoration, pastoral care, and discipleship of others.

Undertaking this training doesn’t mean that you will be required to lead a group.  But it does mean that you will be equipped and ready!  We are all called to disciple others, so this training is open to anyone who is willing to be equipped, and all leaders who want a refresher!

Cost: $30 (includes participant manual)

FORMING: a Work of Grace

Forming is an approach to Christian growth that may be very different to what you have experienced before, because it doesn’t depend on your willpower to make changes in your life.  While there are some things you can change by simply deciding to do so, there are many areas of your heart that you cannot change by an act of will alone.  The harder you try to make those changes, the more discouraged you can become.

This is precisely where Forming offers a way to move forward.  To use a metaphor, rather than trying to row your boat against the current of your inner life in an effort to do what you think is right, Forming shows you how to align your sails with the wind, engaging with the Spirit of God to change the direction of your heart, so you can go places you could never get to by rowing alone.  If you are tired of “row harder” approaches to spiritual growth, then join us in learning how to align with God for the kind of change you always believed should be possible!

Each session in Forming has a particular focus intended to strengthen your spiritual life and help you develop greater intimacy with God.  Video presentations, a workbook, exercises to help you practise “sailing” with God, and additional articles are designed to encourage you on your spiritual journey.

Topics include:  Revisioning Christian Development; Conversational Prayer with God; Balancing Our Part and God’s Part in Spiritual Formation; Addressing Barriers; Renewing Our Mind; Ways to Engage With God; Healing Our Identity; Recovering From Self-Hate; Disarming Our Fears; and Integrating Human Development with Spiritual Development.

Cost: $40 (includes participant manual)

MARRIAGE SEMINAR (One day)

What separates happy marriages from miserable ones?

Surprisingly, it's not healthy communication. It's not conflict resolution skills. It's actually the size of the marriage's joy gap.

Joy Gap/joi gap/ (n.)-1. The length of time between moments of shared joy

When the length of time between moments of shared joy (the joy gap) gets bigger: problems are more likely to overwhelm you, resentment can creep in, and you start to feel distant and alone in your marriage. When the joy gap is smaller: you regularly feel connected and happy, problems feel manageable, and your marriage becomes a reliable spring of joy. So, how do you ensure that you're experiencing joy regularly?

From studies on relationships and neuroscience, the authors have discovered four habits that keep joy regular and problems small. Some couples do them naturally, but anyone can learn. Come and learn the skills that boost joy and re-train your brain to make joy your default setting. You'll learn new skills, including how to:

  • return to joy more quickly after disconnection

  • create stronger bonds and elongate times of happiness

  • boost your enjoyment of physical and emotional intimacy

Find out what your marriage could look like after a little work and a whole lot of joy!

Cost: $40 ( to Include participant manual & morning tea - Please bring your own lunch or some money for lunch)

THE JOY SWITCH

What sets you off?

Rejection. Traffic hassles The spouse who pushes your buttons. The children who won’t listen.  Annoying co-workers…

All these can set you off, and just like that, a good day becomes a bad day.  And not just for you!

Under the right conditions, all of us can be pushed too far.  The trick is knowing how to “get back” to a healthy emotional state – that sweet spot.  What is the secret? It’s as easy as flipping a switch.

Brain science has discovered that there is a “switch” inside your brain that activates joy – the secret of healthy emotions.  When joy is lacking, and the switch is off, we can’t be our best self.  We can become angry, overwhelmed, sad.  The good news is that we don’t have to stay that way.

The Joy Switch will help!  You’ll learn to:

  • Recognize when you’re losing joy

  • Identify your particular “triggers”

  • Practise how to stay in joy

Packed with illustrations, expert insight, and helpful self-assessments, The Joy Switch will help you thrive amid life’s everyday challenges.

Come and make a journey of discovery with others who, like you, are keen to acquire those skills that make relationships work!

This Discipleship Training will include a book to work from, pre-reading before each session, practical exercises to develop insight and skills, and the space to engage and share with a group of people weekly during the training.

Cost: $40 (Includes participant manual)
